Designing a Happy Pier: Year 1 Work with Studio Egret West

In June, we were delighted to welcome back the talented team from Studio Egret West, the architects behind our school building, for a special workshop with our Year 1 pupils.

The visit began with an engaging assembly titled “What does an architect do?”, where children learned about the role of architecture and how design influences the spaces around us. The architects then introduced an exciting real-life challenge:
“Let’s redesign Erith Pier to make it a Happy Pier!”

This creative task was part of an ongoing regeneration project at Erith Pier – a local site close to our school. Our children enthusiastically rose to the challenge, sharing imaginative ideas to transform the pier into a joyful, welcoming space for the community.

The day ended with an outdoor celebration and a vibrant ‘Happy Pier Parade’ around the school grounds, proudly showcasing the ideas and models the children had created.

This hands-on experience gave our pupils a unique insight into the world of design and architecture, showing them how their voices and creativity can help shape their local environment.

Thank you to Studio Egret West for inspiring our young designers – and for capturing some brilliant photographs of the day!
